Growth performance and carcass traits of steers finished on three different systems including legume–grass pasture and grain diets

Inclusion of legume in grass pastures optimizes protein values of the forage and promotes improved digestibility. Therefore, we hypothesized that finishing steers on a novel combination of legumes and grass pasture would produce carcasses with acceptable traits when compared to carcasses from steers finished in feedlot systems. In this study, we evaluated the effects of finishing steers on three systems including: grazing legume–grass pasture containing oats, ryegrass, white and red clover (PAST), grazing PAST plus supplementation with whole corn grain (14 g/kg BW (SUPP)), and on a feedlot-confined system with concentrate only (28 g/kg BW, consisting of 850 g/kg of whole corn grain and 150 g/kg of protein–mineral–vitamin supplement (GRAIN)) on growth performance of steers, carcass traits and digestive disorders. Eighteen steers were randomly assigned to one of three dietary treatments and finished for 91 days. Data regarding pasture and growth performance were collected during three different periods (0 to 28, 29 to 56 and 57 to 91 days). Subsequently, steers were harvested to evaluate carcass traits, presence of rumenitis, abomasitis and liver abscesses. The legume–grass pasture provided more than 19% dry matter of protein. In addition, pasture of paddocks where steers were assigned to SUPP and PAST treatments showed similar nutritional quality. When compared to PAST, finishing on SUPP increased total weight gain per hectare, stocking rate, daily and total weight gains. The increase of weight gain was high to GRAIN than SUPP and PAST. Steers finished on GRAIN had high hot carcass weight, fat thickness and marbling score when compared to PAST. However, these attributes did not differ between GRAIN and SUPP. Abomasum lesions were more prevalent in steers finished on GRAIN when compared to PAST. Results of this research showed that it is possible to produce carcasses with desirable market weight and fat thickness by finishing steers on legume–grass pasture containing oats, ryegrass, white and red clover. Moreover, supplementing steers with corn when grazing on legume–grass pasture produced similar carcass traits when compared to beef fed corn only.

The S. Domingos abandoned mine is a major source of pollutant-metals contamination. Slags from the 19th-20th century contain the most hazardous material. However, the release of pollutant metals depends on the metal-retention capability of weathering products. This work shows that Zn is not effectively retained by these weathering products while As and Pb are partially stored in sulphates. Copper, on the other hand, has a different behaviour and is the most leachable of the elements studied.

This work presents a geochemical study conducted on the abandoned Tinoca Copper mine (southeast Portugal) to evaluate the potential hazard in surrounding areas particularly the effect on the Abrilongo River Dam which receivesthe acid waters from the mine watershed. The characterization of the area was performed over a period of 3 y and involved the study of waters, sediments and mine wastes. A sequential extraction methodology was conducted on the sediments and mine wastes and five elements were selected (Cu, Fe, Zn, Cd and Pb). The statistical and spatial analysis allowed the inference of the affinities between the chemical elements and specific mineralogical phases and to characterize chemical behaviour such as mobility and bioavailability. The results show that the distance to the source (mine-waste deposit), the point of zero charge, and the dynamics of the system are factors that control the behaviour of the elementss tudied. The acid drainage is characterized by an average pH of 2.5 and concentrationsof copper 20 timesgreater than the legal limit for irrigation waters.

Genetic variants associated with dietary intake may be important as factors underlying the development of obesity. We investigated the associations between the obesity candidate genes (fat mass and obesity-associated (FTO), melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R), leptin (LEP) and leptin receptor) and total energy intake and percentage of energy from macronutrients and ultra-processed foods before and during pregnancy. A sample of 149 pregnant women was followed up in a prospective cohort in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A FFQ was administered at 5–13 and 30–36 weeks of gestation. Genotyping was performed using real-time PCR. Associations between polymorphisms and the outcomes were investigated through multiple linear regression and ANCOVA having pre-pregnancy dietary intake as a covariate. The A-allele of FTO-rs9939609 was associated with a −6·5 % (95 % CI −12·3, −0·4) decrease in the percentage of energy from protein and positively associated with the percentage of energy from carbohydrates before pregnancy (β=2·6; 95 % CI 0·5, 4·8) and with a 13·3 % (95 % CI 0·7, 27·5) increase in the total energy intake during pregnancy. The C-allele of MC4R-rs17782313 was associated with a −7·6 % (95 % CI −13·8, −1·0) decrease in the percentage of energy from protein, and positively associated with the percentage of energy from ultra-processed foods (β=5·4; 95 % CI 1·1, 9·8) during pregnancy. ANCOVA results revealed changes in dietary intake from pre-pregnancy to pregnancy for FTO-rs9939609 (percentage of energy from ultra-processed foods, P=0·03), MC4R-rs17782313 (total energy intake, P=0·02) and LEP-rs7799039 (total energy intake, P=0·04; percentage of energy from protein, P=0·04). These findings suggest significant associations between FTO-rs9939609, MC4R-rs17782313 and LEP-rs7799039 genes and the components of dietary intake in pregnant women.

In this paper was study the effect of heat treatment on mechanical properties of an API X-60 steel used for storage and transportation of hydrocarbons.In the first stage evaluation are mechanical properties of steel heat treated by the technique of the three-point test according to ASTM 399-90 was carried out. In the second stage, characterization of the type of failure and microstructure through optical microscopy (OM) was determined; also heat treated samples were then mechanically tested for hardness (HRC) and nano-indentation. The presence of alloying elements by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the fracture surfaces generated in the steel with varying times, temperatures and cooling medium generated by different modes of solicitation (Bending), likewise with loading rates were determined. The results revealed a ductile fracture and microstructures (PF) ferrite-pearlite (DP), bainite -ferrite (BF) and martensite-retained and martensite/retained austenite (MA). The present work reports on the effect of hydrogen on mechanical properties of aluminum AA 6061 hardened by precipitation. Test specimens are solution treated in an electric induction furnace at 803 K during 1 hour and then precipitation hardened during 4 hours at 423, 448 and 473 K. The heat treated specimens are subjected to a hydrogen cathodic charging process during 0, 24 and 96 hours and then tested under monotonic uniaxial tensile loading according to ASTM E8-03. Scanning electron microscopy characterization of tensile fracture surfaces reveals that hydrogen charging of precipitation hardened specimens enhances intergranular cracking by microvoid coalescence and intragranular cleavage fracture. The results show that, although hydrogen charging causes embrittlement of precipitation hardened aluminum AA 6061, the effect is a function of time; short time cathodic charging increases the ductility of the alloy.

This work study the effect on aging thermal treatment on micro-alloyed steels API X70 pipe, microstructure and mechanical properties such a yield strength (Y), hardness (Hv) and Young´s modulus (E) are presented in this work. Thermal treatment consists of two phases: i) The solution treatment introducing samples in a electric induction furnace at 1100 °C for 30 min under argon atmosphere and water quenching, ii) aging process for five temperature in the range between 204 to 650 °C for 30 min of time exposition and water quenching, respectively. The microstructural characterization was examined by optical microscopy and matrix samples aging showed microstructures like acicular ferritic, polygonal ferritic and bainitic-ferritic, and the secondary phases were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) obtained by SEM evidencing the presence of precipitates composed of vanadium (V), niobium (Nb) and titanium (Ti). The mechanical properties were evaluated by depth sensitive indentation test at the samples aging, the results showed increase of the (Hv) and (E)to the conditions of low temperature aging.
Rotating wall vessel exposure alters protein secretion and global gene expression in Staphylococcus aureus

Staphylococcus aureus is routinely recovered from air and surface samples taken aboard the International Space Station (ISS) and poses a health threat to crew. As bacteria respond to the low shear forces engendered by continuous rotation conditions in a Rotating Wall Vessel (RWV) and the reduced gravitational field of near-Earth flight by altering gene expression, we examined the effect of low-shear RWV growth on protein secretion and gene expression by three S. aureus isolates. When cultured under 1 g, the total amount of protein secreted by these strains varied up to fourfold; under continuous rotation conditions, protein secretion by all three strains was significantly reduced. Concentrations of individual proteins were differentially reduced and no evidence was found for increased lysis. These data suggest that growth under continuous rotation conditions reduces synthesis or secretion of proteins. A limited number of changes in gene expression under continuous rotation conditions were noted: in all isolates vraX, a gene encoding a polypeptide associated with cell wall stress, was down-regulated. A vraX deletion mutant of S. aureus SH1000 was constructed: no differences were found between SH1000 and ΔvraX with respect to colony phenotype, viability, protein export, antibiotic susceptibility, vancomycin kill kinetics, susceptibility to cold or heat and gene modulation. An ab initio protein–ligand docking simulation suggests a major binding site for β-lactam drugs such as imipenem. If such changes to the bacterial phenotype occur during spaceflight, they will compromise the capacity of staphylococci to cause systemic infection and to circumvent antibacterial chemotherapy.

The cognitive profile of early onset Parkinson’s disease (EOPD) has not been clearly defined. Mutations in the parkin gene are the most common genetic risk factor for EOPD and may offer information about the neuropsychological pattern of performance in both symptomatic and asymptomatic mutation carriers. EOPD probands and their first-degree relatives who did not have Parkinson’s disease (PD) were genotyped for mutations in the parkin gene and administered a comprehensive neuropsychological battery. Performance was compared between EOPD probands with (N = 43) and without (N = 52) parkin mutations. The same neuropsychological battery was administered to 217 first-degree relatives to assess neuropsychological function in individuals who carry parkin mutations but do not have PD. No significant differences in neuropsychological test performance were found between parkin carrier and noncarrier probands. Performance also did not differ between EOPD noncarriers and carrier subgroups (i.e., heterozygotes, compound heterozygotes/homozygotes). Similarly, no differences were found among unaffected family members across genotypes. Mean neuropsychological test performance was within normal range in all probands and relatives. Carriers of parkin mutations, whether or not they have PD, do not perform differently on neuropsychological measures as compared to noncarriers. The cognitive functioning of parkin carriers over time warrants further study. (JINS, 2011, 17, 1–10)

Keratinophilic Fungi: a microscopic approach by in vitro hair perforation analysis

Nowadays, environmental moulds are often being referred as also being the cause of superficial mycosis. Keratinophilic activity is one of the characteristics involved in the infectious process of some fungal species. With these findings some problems appear: 1) Do these species really act on keratinized tissues?; 2) How do these fungi perform their keratinophilic activity?; 3) Should we validate the results as positives in the case of isolating from the lesions only species considered as environmental? To answer to these questions, the in vitro hair perforation test was performed in 60 different species, including dermatophytes and environmental isolates. In vitro perforation capability, believed to be one of the characteristics involved in some fungal infectious processes, was assessed with aid of optic-, fluorescence-, electron scanning- and transmission-microscopy, followed by calculation of keratinophilic activity. According to Ali-Shtayeh et al., each hair degradation factor has a specific weight in a keratinolytic activity intensity index called “IKA”, which ranges between 0 and 100%. Changes in the hair structure may occur in the two following different ways: (a) Superficial Erosion, where there is an even hair degradation from the outside to the inside (b) Radial Penetration where there is a localized degradation of hair surface, often in a pocket-like structure. Different types of hyphæ are observed: of narrow diameter called boring hyphæ, of larger diameter called wider boring hyphæ) and swollen boring hyphæ (with dilated tips). Hyphæ may also produce highly specialized perforation organs.

Moderately deep ground based UBV images are used to investigate the OB associations and star clusters in IC 1613. Fifty eight OB associations with sizes between 30 and 130 pc are outlined. The iteration between associations and superbubbles in IC 1613 was analyzed. The lack of star clusters was confirmed.
Kinematics of the Ionized Gas in the Irregular Galaxies IC 10 and NGC 4449

We have searched for supernova remnants (SNRs) in the irregular galaxies IC 10 and NGC 4449 by means of Fabry-Perot interferometry in Hα and [SII] lines, complemented by radio continuum observations. We find several new SNR candidates in each galaxy in addition to the known ones. Although these galaxies have several common properties, the distributions of SNRs in each galaxy is different. This shows that the star formation mechanisms in these galaxies act in different ways, in favor of the formation of a large nebular HII complex in IC 10, similar to 30 Dor in the Large Magellanic Cloud. We are studying the conditions over which these different star formation histories take place.

Deep UBV and JHK photometry of the stars in IC 1613 was used to investigate the stellar content in the H II regions of the northeast sector of the galaxy. The ages of nine of the associations outlined by Hodge (1978) were determined. A10 and A14 were found to be the youngest associations with ages of approximately 5 Myr, while A12, A18 and A19 were the oldest ones found, having a common age of approx. 20 Myr. Analysis of theoretical HR diagrams shows the presence of young massive stars in the associations, which have been born almost coeval. We have also found evidence of a difference between the slopes of the IMFs and differential LFs, between the group of associations embedded in gas and the group containing A12, A18 and A19, which are not affected by nebulosity.
